Permitted Species
Location
This board includes arctic, northern and southern terrains; please play species where appropriate. This means:

Fighting
- Canidae is a website for wild North American canines. This means you may play Gray Wolves (C. lupus), Eastern Wolves (C. lycaon), Red Wolves (C. rufus), Coyotes (C. latrans), Red Foxes (V. vulpes), Gray Foxes (U. cinereoargenteus), Arctic Foxes (V. lagopus), Swift Foxes (V. velox), and Kit Foxes (V. macrotis).
- Canis or Vulpes genus hybrids are permissible, however, you may only join a maximum of three such hybrid animals.
- Domesticated dogs are (currently) limited to one medium to large, robust pure or mixed breed per player.
- The offspring of joined characters do not count towards restrictions; in other words, if your domesticated dog has puppies with another character's wolf, the offspring do not count towards your three permissible hybrids.
Location
This board includes arctic, northern and southern terrains; please play species where appropriate. This means:
- Gray wolves may be played anywhere on the board, though all gray wolves played in the Arctic Terrains must be arctic wolves, and Mexican gray wolves may only be played in the Southern Terrains.
- Coyotes, red foxes, kit foxes, and gray foxes may be played anywhere on the board except for the arctic.
- Swift foxes may only be played in the northern terrains.
- Red wolves may only be played in the southern terrains.
- Eastern wolves may only be played in the northern terrains.
- Arctic foxes may only be played in the arctic terrains.
Realism
- This site permits speech, however, appropriate animal behavior is still mandatory. This includes dominance hierarchy, hunting habits, territory and range, mating system, courtship behavior, etc.
- Please observe appropriate non-verbal communication such as posture, tail and ear positioning, body language, and natural vocalizations.
- Social species must be social, though individual personality variation is acceptable.
- Similarly, solitary species should remain solitary, but non group-forming interactions are perfectly acceptable.
- Whenever possible, packs should be formed conventionally (a mated pair creating a pack). However, you may accept loners into existing packs for the sake of player inclusion.
- Coat and eye color should be realistic and reasonably commonplace; you may register one character per species with atypical colors or markings if you can provide photo evidence. Example: if you would like to play a melanistic coyote or piebald fox, you are allowed to so long as you have an undoctored photo of one as proof of this color's existence.
- Special powers, unnatural strength, human items, etc. are all unacceptable. This is not a fantasty RPG.
- No "evil," "saintly," or "extreme" characters; do not look up size and weight records to make an undefeatable warrior, or join characters that are unnaturally diabolical or altruistic.
Reproduction
- Mating should be species appropriate; monogamous species should be monogamous, polygynous species should be polygynous.
- Infidelity is permitted in the case of a long-absent mate or severely strained relationship, but not encouraged.
- Any species mating rituals prior to and after mating must be observed.
- Mating should be realistic/detailed but not pornographic.
- Homosexuality, bisexuality, and transgender are permissible in limited numbers.
- Minimum gestation is 3 weeks, longer if desired.
- Minimum time until eyes open is 5 days, longer if desired.
- Minimum time until weaning is 2 weeks, longer if desired.
- Aging is player controlled after weaning.
Hunting
- Hunting is realistic and appropriate to the species and number of individuals; research the common prey of your species, please!
- Hunting and feeding behavior should be true to real-life habits.
- Hunts should not have a 100% success rate.
- You play prey and determine the outcome of hunts.
Territory
- There are no territory boards; your territory is a conceptual, literary location and can be specified on the map.
- Be sure to play your characters in the terrain you claimed territory on if they are interacting on their own land.
- All packs, pairs, or solitary territorial species may claim land. Lone pack or pair animals may not.
- Interspecies territories may overlap, though it is not encouraged. Intraspecies territories should not overlap unless they do in real life.
- Rape and infanticide are permitted with player consent but should occur only infrequently.
Fighting
- If you start a fight, you must stay in it until it is done. If you want out, you must submit or win. The instigator (starter) of the fight may be killed; this is to cut down on gratuitous fighting. However, if you intend on killing your opponent, you must give them a chance to submit. This is to prevent character killers on both ends.
- Although instegators may be killed, it is reccomended that the attacked respond appropriately to the direction of the fight (ie. you are not invincible and can be bested.)
- It is considered good manners to chat with whomever you are challenging if the nature of your fight will affect more than just their character (ie. change a pack social dynamic, orphan their young, kill their mate, etc)
- Fighting should only occur when appropriate, such as territorial disputes, food possession, mate guarding, offspring protection, or dominance squabbles.
- Fights must respect the "rules" of the species; submissive and aggressive behaviors must both be recognized, and combative behavior should be relevant to the species.
- When fighting, one "hit" per post is permissible, and the player being "hit" must be recognized.
- That said, while you may state the location and type of strike, you may not state the reaction; the player largely determines to what extent he or she is wounded and how the character reacts. This must be within reason, however; players who take a serious hit and fail to acknowledge the injury will be corrected.
- Crippling or fatal hits can be suggested but an also be dodged.
- No character killing unless permitted by the player. By that stretch, no permanent, life threatening, or debilitating injuries are permitted without the player's permission.
- You are on your own unless the rules are broken; do not get in over your head! If you are losing, submit before severe injuries are sustained.
