The Story So Far… The deaf martin Katariina wakes to an icy, cold morning, which is further complicated when she makes the acquaintance of Snare, an energetic and talkative ermine. After speaking for a time, the two choose to search for food. Original Thread Last Two Posts: Snare squealed with delight, and, forgetting to speak slower, burst out rapidly "YAY, we can be friends! Do you have friends? Do you like your friends? Do you like me? Do you like the cold? Are you deaf? I'm not deaf. But I think you're deaf. What does deaf mean anyway? Why does it sound like death? I'm cold are you cold? Do you like the warm weather? Do you wish it were warm? Am I being hyper again? I'm hungry, are you hungry? Can we hunt together? Are we friends? Where do you live? What do you do for fun? I like running around, do you? Hopping is fun too! I have a sister! Do you have a brother or sister? Do you have a mother or father? I like snow but its cold! Do you like cold snow? I feel bored." His jaws parted in a maniac-like grin as he eagerly awaiting Katariina's response.

~Oh goodness, there he went again. Babbling his head off, full-speed ahead for the hyper babble. At least he wasn't moving this time, and at that point she was beginning to understand his behavior. He didn't seem to be trying to make it difficult for her -- On the other hand, he just looked happy about something that he was babbling like a lunatic.
Katariina focused hopelessly on his rapidly moving mouth. Once again, she only caught a few words. Friends... Cold... Deaf... Brother... Hunt... Like... Running... Bored...
Well then. There was a babble that she would not be able to decipher very well. She thought quickly, trying to establish from his earlier behavior what he could be saying. Friends... Well, he must be excited about being friends. Granted, she hadn't said they would be friends, but Snare reminded her of a cub who would immediately latch onto friendship at the slightest opportunity. By not flat out saying no, she had solidified their friendship. Great.
Cold... He was babbling about the weather again, she guessed. Nothing major there. But deaf was more interesting, perhaps why she had been able to catch it. So he did realize it. Katariina's body sagged slightly with shame; she did hide it so pitifully. Quickly, however, she stood straight, head high as she looked at Snare. Yeah, she was deaf, but he didn't seem especially bothered by it, so there was no point to her moping.
Brother... She had no idea there. Maybe he thought he was her brother; he seemed loopy enough. Hunt, she didn't know either. She had told him where to hunt, after all. Perhaps he needed directions or assistance? He must be new if he asked about hunting grounds in the first place. Katariina didn't especially like the idea of helping him, being a relative loner, but a few hours of hunting wouldn't kill her. She may actually do better having someone around to hear things for her. Slowly, the marten found herself warming to an idea that she wasn't even sure he had presented.
Like, running, and bored perhaps made the most sense of all. He liked running, and he was bored, probably because he wasn't running. Katariina thought quickly. She wouldn't normally worry about his boredom, but if he was bored, soon he would start cartwheeling all over the place and be impossible to understand. Best to get him doing something so he wasn't bored. Perhaps hunting... Yes, that was a good idea. They could go hunting, he could be moving and no longer bored, and hopefully they could come out of it with a meal for the winter.~
"You're bored? I have an idea, then. Let's go hunt. There may be some scraps left where the wolves hunt -- If they bother us we can always flee to the trees and look for birds."
~She stretched, yawning and digging her claws into the soil, and then winced as pain shot through her body. Er, right. Falling out of trees, bruises, generally unpleasant. She sighed and hoped that there was some carrion, since hunting for birds would not be plausible when her body couldn't handle a yawn. Upon righting herself, she looked back at Snare.~
"And yes, I am deaf. That's why I want you to speak more slowly -- So I can understand you."
~She shrugged to show that she was offended. Annoyed, yes, but she wasn't about to kill him. Instead, she padded a few steps in the direction of the nearest clearing where she knew the wolves would often stop by. It was the first place she often stopped for food, and she turned to see if Snare would follow.~

Snare ran ahead of Katariina so she could read his lips. Remembering to speak slowly and clearly, he mouthed "OK, let's go," slowly. Then he ran back behind the deaf martin so she could lead the way.
OOC: This is so short but I absolutely cannot think of anything else.

Her idea was a success, it seemed. However, at first she thought perhaps her idea had been too good for the energetic ermine; he bounced ahead without any opinion. Then, however, he turned straight on her, and very carefully -- almost amusingly so, seeing how he had spoken earlier -- approved of her plan. Katariina couldn't help but grin; he learned quickly, even if he did have too much energy to spare. "Great. I know a place that we can go." Her voice was soft, an automatic reaction to the idea that they were hunting; she had learned over the years that animals often heard her coming and fled. When Snare bounded behind her, Katariina headed off, barely feeling the ground before she lifted her paws again. It was, she knew, how to walk silently, so other animals did not startle. She scented the air, and frowned at the scent of wolf heavy on the air. However, it did not seem to become any stronger as she moved toward her hunting grounds, and so she shrugged it off, focusing on the idea of food. If a wolf came along, she could easily scamper up a tree. Then, she froze, eyes focused up ahead; something had moved in the bushes. Looking behind her, she motioned for Snare to come forward. Martens were solitary at heart, but if she had a companion, she might as well use him to her advantage. Katariina crouched down, watching the bushes ahead. After a few moments -- painfully slow -- a rabbit hopped out of the bushes, sniffing the ground, ears swiveling. Ah. Katariina had never been good with rabbits... Too fast and skittish for her. Therefore, she turned to Snare. This was this game. ((Hopefully that gives you something to work with Feel free to control the rabbit))

OOC: I'm fairly sure this will be a suckish post ;D
BIC: Snare nodded slightly at Katariina; any sudden movements would alert the creature and it would dash off. Lowering his belly to just off the ground, he slunk forward, his paws dragging him around a bush. As he began to emerge from the other side of the frost-glittering vegetation, the rabbit's head went up and it's nose twitched, as if sniffing the air for danger. Snare stopped in his tracks. It was a few moments before the rabbit hesitantly began to hop around and browse for more grass stubble hidden under the snow. Suddenly, Snare jumped up. The rabbit, with it's back to him, did not see Snare's pounce but heard his feet thump on the ground as he fell. Turning around, the poor creature glanced at Snare, who was twisting and turning, bouncing and flailing, making soft chrrs. The rabbit, mesmerized by Snare's dance, stood still. Gradually Snare bounced closer and closer until he was within striking range. He jumped high into the air, and before the rabbit realized that this leap was different, he fell down upon it and the poor creature was killed. Snare spat out the limp remains and lined up his mouth with Katariina's eyes, saying "How's that for a hunt?"

Katariina wasn't quite sure what she was expecting from the ermine. It had to be able to hunt, of course; hunting was a basic staple of a mustelid's life, and she imagined she would be able to tell if it ate mostly carrion. She then expected some sort of stealth, a decent attempt, if not success.
She did not expect the thing to dance. When he first leapt blatantly into the clearing, she thought perhaps he had missed, or was going to flush it out. When he began leaping and jumping into the air, she wanted to run out and drag him back into the bushes, shouting at him about what he thought he was doing. Surely the rabbit would run off.
Instead, the idiotic thing just stood there, staring. Eyes wide, the marten stared flabbergasted as Snare danced his way over to the rabbit, leapt high, and landing straight on the creature, capturing it and suffocating it almost before it knew what hit it. It was... Unreal.
Then the ermine turned around and asked her what she thought. Katariina walked into the clearing slowly, thinking furiously. What was she supposed to say? That wasn't really a hunt? You may want to learn some real hunting skills, because not all rabbits are that stupid?
"Interesting."
She supposed that word would do. She jerked her head toward the rabbit.
"It's yours first. You caught it."
Not that she planned on sharing, of course; one rabbit probably wouldn't be enough for two of them. However, she wasn't about to steal his kill, no matter how strangely he had gotten it, and so left him to his prey.

Snare shrugged. If she didn't want some rabbit, then that was fine with him. But, then, he remembered that Katariina was his friend now. "Are you....sure you don't want any?" Saying the words slowly was especially difficult, especially because he had grown up with ermines, and even though he was especially energetic among his species, his brothers and sisters could match the speed of his speech also.
Another thing he was not used to is not...jumping...around! Though the rabbit hunt had used up some of his energy, the cold was still penetrating his fur and reaching his skin. Argh!! He shivered a little bit, which was, what he supposed, was the best he could do in the company of Katariina. If he couldn't talk fast, and if he couldn't run around, was it really worth being friends with a deaf marten? Of course it was! He had been alone for some time now and was craving company.
Anyway, the rabbit was going to get cold if he didn't eat it, so he expertly tore open the rump and began feeding on the delicious insides.
OOC: I'm getting better ^.^ Slowly...well...not really...but sort of...I guess...Not really
