___The sun filtered through the bars, cris-crossing Naveen's face with alternating bands of shadow and light. His shallow breaths were visible in the cold air, puffing from his nostrils like tiny twin tendrils of smoke. Beneath their lids, the wolf's eyes flicked to and fro at a frenetic pace, his mind troubled as he drifed in and out of consciousness. Breeze rustled his fur through the open front of the cage, bringing unfamiliar smells of a far off land and blowing away the familiar scents of home. Home - home was a cage too, just a larger one, with grass and trees, carcasses that appeared like magic, humans who watched quietly from afar, hunched over note pads or snapping photographs. Home was with Evangeline. Eva, he called her for short. Eva... ___In a groggy haze, his eyes fluttered open, clouded from dryness, a side-effect of the sedatives. He tried to raise his head, only to have the side of his face crash back down on the metal, too weak and wobbly to react. Letting out a frustrated huff of breath, his nose running and tounge crushed between his teeth, the wolf kicked his legs worthlessly, his claws scraping the stainless steel and making his ears hurt. Hushed voices and scuffling marked the presence of the humans before his confused sense of smell could. His eyes widened then, nostrils quivering. Never before had he smelled them so close - and there were other smells too. Unfamiliar wolves, strange lands, prey. Inhaling sharply, he scuffled backwards across the cage floor, trying to turn around and hide.
