I think this site could use a character approval system, where the moderators have to actually READ the people's characters and decide if they are ok to rp as. The two reasons I'm bringing this up is that one, all rp sites I've seen work like that, and two, some characters we make might not be very smartly done age wise or coloring *coughTokicough* ._.
[hey btw toki is cool ;D just needs abit of correcting sometimes]

While this is a good idea, it is also one of the things I tried to steer away from in writing the rules to avoid inhibiting the creative process (and also to allow more immediate RPing - many of our senior members/staff have very busy schedules). We are a pretty free-spirited RPG and while this sometimes come at the cost of a bit of aggravation, I prefer keeping this a site that is not oppressively moderated. The rules are very clear on what is permissible, so it generally isn't a problem - though occasionally players do neglect to read the rules and need some gentle correction. This is generally an RP for mature individuals capable of reading rules and making sound choices about realistic but creative characters; we do not aim to attract a crowd that can't join a reasonable character without a million moderator corrections. We are a small and tightly knit RPG for the most part, and while I can't speak for my membership I think the way we have been doing things has mostly worked. That being said, if you feel very strongly about this, you are welcomed to set up a petition thread. I can't speak for my members so perhaps others share your sentiment and simply haven't mentioned it.

I have to admit, you DO have a good reason for not doing this, I just think that the characters should be looked at by the moderators, just for little things that should be changed to make more sence, or just changed for commensence, like age, you wouldn't be abandoned at one week for example. And also, I think that if it isnt changed in a couple of days, it should be corrected appropraitly by a mod, but eh, its your call really, UNLESS the majority of members vote for it to be otherwise, right?

But if RW moderated character join forms, I wouldn't be able to sneak my unreasonable characters into the game anymore!
More seriously, I think that the current system promotes a sense of the members being a group of peers; it's an environment I've always appreciated, and one that I hope makes new members more comfortable, as well. On the other hand, I can see where someone might be unsure whether certain character traits are acceptable, seeing as this site has much more focus on realism than is usual, and why they might not know who to ask to clarify matters.
Perhaps there could be an area set up for character forms to be posted and looked over? That way, the option is there for "moderated" joining, but it wouldn't be compulsory.

The moderators do look over the characters, though -- it's not like we just ignore whoever joins. I have already spoken to Toki about the age of her character. Normally, a gentle reminder gets the point across, and if more action is needed, it is done.
Stan's idea is interesting -- perhaps we could include that in our Rules? That people are free to ask questions about their characters and forms before joining?

Well, in all honesty, I really do think that the characters get looked over, and if there is any problems, then the mods give them a poke.
I think it's sort of a "post the character and play, unless otherwise noted" kind of system.
That was just my impression, at least. Though, admittedly, I haven't actually joined a character in at least a year, lol.

lol yeah I have noticed that the characters get noticed and read by mods, I dont think anyone would read one thing 20,000 times [except me xD on accident o.o" ] also, I think Stan gave a pretty good idea and if there's a vote to add it, its got mine. And breeze, I noticed you talked to toki, it was merely an example.
btw: Redpyre, your pic makes me laugh every time xD

I have to side with RW on this. I think the lack of restraints is refreshing. There are individual cases in which some members need to be poked in order to correct something. For example, age. Soul, I don't really see how you can talk.. You joined two wolf pups who are eight weeks old. That isn't exactly realistic either. Yes, they /could/ be weaned, but it is highly unlikely that they would be able to survive on their own. They would be easy prey. I'm not saying that we all don't have a couple odd characters, but perhaps you should have joined a slightly older wolf to start off? It just seems a little hypocritical for you to say that because Toki joined a 1 week old wolf pup that we need a system of rigorous standards we must jump through in order to simply join a character when you joined two barely weaned pups yourself.
At any rate, I am very pleased with the way the site runs at present.. It's worked well for years without any significant issues, so I don't really see any reason to change it now. ;P
The way I see it is if the free form ways of this site don't work for an individual that perhaps they should find one of the millions of strictly regimented sites to better suit their needs.

I do like Stan/Breeze's idea of having an area where members can perhaps post characters they aren't 100% sure about, but it would also be just as easy for them to shoot a mod or admin a PM. What do you think, folks?

Since the member turn over rate is fairly low here, a whole sub-board seems like overkill, but I do like the idea of a thread where questions pertaining directly to join forms/new characters can be posted.

So do you think maybe a pinned sticky topic on each join or character info forum where people can post and a mod/admin can edit the post for approval, comments, etc. would be a good idea? Obviously accompanied by a PM to the member so they know that there's been an update and to let them discuss any issues? It would probably be better than a "conversational" format or the sticky thread would become over-incumbered with arguments.

RW, that is a good idea, I'm not a mod but its got my approval lol
edit- also, if this had been suggested before and then made, it would have helped quite abit in being alittle more reilistic with the ages of my wolves and the time they spent alone... now, I need to do alittle bit of character editing lol..
edit2- O= I didn't even notice Nicole's post ealier, sorry ._. yeah I fixed that up alittle bit

I could have sworn that something like this did exist in the old board, or something. Or, did we just ask in the Plot board or something before making characters we weren't sure about? I can't remember.
All I remember is doing an obsessive amount of research before joining my characters, lol. xD
